OUR APPROACH

Grown from seed

The vast majority of our plants are grown from seed, not cuttings. This supports biodiversity by allowing the continued evolution of that plant. We never collect or dig up plants from the wild.

The majority of our seed is sourced locally, either purchased from Colorado seed companies or harvested from mother plants on our property in Paonia. Locally sourced seeds grow into plants that can handle the harsh conditions we face in Colorado and the western US.

100% Neonicotinoid Free

We never use seeds treated with neonicotinoids. Research shows that plants grown from seeds that are coated with neonicotinoids, a common practice, have residues of this pesticide in their pollen and nectar. This can impact the health of solitary bees and other pollinators.

Our commitments to healthy plants

Zero Chemicals

We do not use pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, fungicides, or other chemicals. We feel strongly about continuing to manage pests and maintain plant health without sprays, oils, or chemicals, even those that are labeled “organic.” Instead, we manage pests by hand removal or by covering the plant.

Potting Mix

We use a low-nutrient potting mix from Paonia Soil Company. Using a mix that is low in nutrients results in plants that will be quite happy to settle into our native, low-nutrient soils.

Recycling

We encourage our customers to return their plastic pots to us (in good condition) so they can be reused.
